A while ago Econet introduced a flurry of new bundles to keep up with the coming of a ruthless rival called Starlink. Starlink stirred the market with consumers flocking to the new service provider given the affordability of its data regardless of upfront equipment costs. While consumers rejoiced, our traditional telecomms service providers were left fearing for their survival so Econet reacted by introducing new bundles like SmartBiz but among the new introductions was the smart for you bundle, which was ambiguous, with any clear specifications on how it works and how to use it with only a fair use policy in place without details. At first it rolled out to few select users before it passed the testing phase but even now, most users don't know how it really works.
A long overdue issue was finally addressed by Econet in it's latest release, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe says it has reviewed its Smart4U bundle offering as part of ongoing efforts to align the popular product with changing customer needs and usage patterns. Econet further clarified how Smart4U works in its briefing, giving users an explanation to one of their most burning questions.
At the heart of the Smart4U experience is personalization. Unlike standard data bundles that everyone buys, Smart4U packages are crafted specifically for you. Econet determines these offers by looking at your personal usage habits regarding voice calls, data, and SMS over the past three months. This explains why your menu might feature different options than someone else's, and why your own personalized offers might change, disappear, or reappear as your habits evolve. You can always check what is currently available to you by dialing *143#.
Smart4U is designed to provide customers with value based on their unique usage patterns. Back then unlike standard bundles that are available to all customers, Smart4U offers are generated based on an assessment of a subscriber’s voice, data and SMS usage over the previous three months. This therefore means different customers will receive different bundle offers, based on their unique usage patterns. At the same time, there is also the possibility of an individual customer’s offer increasing, decreasing, disappearing or reappearing over time based on changes in their usage patterns
The system is designed to work in three stages to balance network quality. When you first start using your bundle, you enjoy the highest speeds available in your current area. However, once you reach certain usage thresholds, the network will automatically move you to a second stage where speeds are reduced, and eventually to a third stage if your usage continues to exceed those limits.
It is important to note that your actual internet speed can be influenced by other factors too, such as your location, the strength of the network coverage, the capability of your mobile device, and how congested the network is at that particular time.

If you find that your data allocation has been exhausted or your speed has been reduced before your 30-day bundle period is up, you have the option to purchase a Smart4U Top-Up bundle. These top-ups are designed to restore your browsing speeds back to the maximum level available in your location, allowing you to get back to high-speed connectivity.
Fair Usage Policy (FUP)
To keep the network running smoothly for everyone, Econet applies what is known as a Fair Usage Policy, or FUP. This is a common practice used by internet providers all over the world to ensure that the network remains stable. Without these measures, a very small number of extremely heavy users could consume so much capacity that it would degrade the internet experience for the majority of the customers.
FUP applies to Smart4U bundles and is designed to ensure a fair and consistent experience for all users across the network. FUP is an accepted practice among internet and mobile broadband service providers globally, that ensures equitable network performance for all customers by preventing a small number of excessively heavy users from degrading the quality of service for the rest of the users.
The policy helps protect network performance, prevent inequitable use of network resources and guarantees critical access to services for all customers as data consumption continues to grow.Under the Fair Usage Policy, customers enjoy maximum internet speeds available in their location. However, once certain usage thresholds are reached, browsing speeds may gradually start to decrease in stages to help maintain overall network quality in the area for all customers.
Smart4U bundles remain valid for 30 days or until the allocated data is exhausted, whichever comes first, and can only be purchased once per calendar month. However, a customer who deplete their Smart4U allocation before the 30-day bundle expiry period is reached, has the option to purchase a Smart4U Top-Up bundle. Top-up bundles restore browsing speeds to the maximum level available in the customer’s location, subject to prevailing network conditions, allowing customers to continue enjoying high-speed internet access.
Finally, keep in mind that Smart4U bundles are intended specifically for the line they were purchased on. They are non-transferable, and they do not support tethering or hotspot functionalities. By understanding these policies, you can better manage your expectations and make the most out of your mobile data experience.
