Prior to StarLink entry, Zimbabwe had one of the most expensive data packages if not the most expensive in the world. While the introduction of StarLink might have resulted in changes the problem is still not yet resolved. Some giants like Econet were forced to innovate, coming up with SmartBiz to counter the StarLink threat. While StarLink monthly pricing is cheap, well there Kit to get started has a steep price tag which most Zimbabweans can’t afford in one go, that’s why most Zimbabweans have failed to crossover. But StarLink now offers these Kits for free in Zimbabwe and DRC just like how it has done in several European countries but to get a free kit you have to commit to a 12 month subscription plan. So here is all you need to know.

While it may be even harder to commit to this new offer, if you really take a minute to actually calculate and compare you will see sacrificing once might be worth it. Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are the first African countries where new users can now access Starlink’s 12-month Residential Service Option a programme that allows users to get Starlink hardware completely free of charge when they commit to a full year of service.

Netizens welcomed this move and were excited about the opportunity to connect without paying upfront for hardware. Given our economic situation and the price of data it’s understandable to see how Zimbabweans reacted to the new on X formerly twitter expressing their gratitude.

While not all will migrate to StarLink but if most do, it will force other player to provide competitive prices to the market, because it’s a game of numbers. Telecommunications companies need subscribers to operate because reduced subscribers won’t reduce operating costs the same because they are not directly proportional so in general it would force them to provide competitive prices to lure back clients which is a win-win for us users either way.

Taking to the platform X a user thanked Elon Musk and StarLink for this game changing offer to help accommodate everyone with dynamic pricing and fast internet which by the way covers even the most remote areas you could think of which is yet another advantage of StarLink as compared to our traditional Internet Service Providers who uses ground boosters to provide service, most of us who have visited our relatives on holidays agree that Rurals didn’t have the best coverage.

This marks a major development in internet connectivity for the region, where expensive hardware, economic challenges and limited infrastructure have made broadband access out of reach for many with StarLink being a luxury if you could afford it.

What Is Starlink’s 12-Month Residential Service Option?

The 12-month Residential Service Option was previously known as the “12-month commitment” plan. According to Starlink, the plan gives new Residential customers the chance to receive a Starlink Kit at no cost when they agree to maintain service for a minimum of 12 months that means you provide a guarantee to pay the monthly subscription for access for 12 months straight without fail.

The Starlink Kit, which typically includes a satellite dish, Wi-Fi router, cables, and a base mount, has a market value of US$389 in Zimbabwe or more, depending on country.
“In select areas, new Starlink customers can receive a Starlink Kit at no cost when they commit to a 12-month Residential service,” explains the official Starlink page.

The service becomes active once the kit is received and installed, following a brief trial period. Once the trial period ends, the 12-month commitment kicks in and users must stay connected or face financial penalties by paying a certain amount depending on the number of months you had already paid for.

What Happens If You Cancel, Relocate, Or Fail To Pay?

Cancelling the service early, changing your address, transferring the kit, or even missing a single payment during the 12-month commitment will result in a Change Fee of US$290. This amount decreases monthly over the 12-month period.

For instance, if you cancel after 6 months, you would owe US$145 StarLink in additional costs because you would have defaulted on the agreed terms.

“The Change Fee will be reduced by an equal amount each month over the Commitment Period,” explains the Starlink Zimbabwe Terms of Service.
“For example, the Change Fee in any given month is equal to the Change Fee multiplied by the number of months remaining in Commitment Period divided by 12.”

Customers who cancel within the 30-day trial period must return the Starlink Kit to avoid penalties. Starlink may pursue unpaid balances through debt collection agencies or credit reporting systems, depending on local laws.

So it’s advisable that you read the terms for your self and make sure you understand everything before committing to anything.

To qualify, users must:~Be new Starlink Residential customersOR be existing customers activating a new service line~Be located in an eligible country or areaIn Africa, only Zimbabwe and the DRC currently have nationwide access to the offer.

But outside Africa there are several other countries than are eligible, a list which include Canada(was first by the way), Germany, Spain, Norway, Japan, Ireland, Italy, and over 30 others. In Australia, the offer is restricted to certain regions.

The promotion also extends to the Residential Lite plan in some areas, though this varies by country. If a customer switches to Residential Lite after signing up, no Change Fee will apply.
“The promotion is exclusively available to new customers or existing users who open a new service line,” according to the official explainer.“Restrictions may vary by country.”

What You Need To Know Before Signing Up

Here are the terms you should know:
~Missing even one payment can trigger the Change Fee.

~The free kit remains property of Starlink unless the full commitment is honoured or the Change Fee is paid.

~The offer is not available to users who are simply reactivating a cancelled service.

~You must contact customer support if you want to change or cancel your plan during the commitment.

At the end of the 12-month period, you can continue service, downgrade, or cancel with no fee.
NB: If Starlink modifies its terms during the commitment and you choose to cancel as a result, you may be required to return the kit or be billed its full value.

“If you do not return such a Kit in these circumstances,” the Terms warn,“Starlink may charge your payment method for the US$290 price of the kit, subject to proration.”

It’s important to note failure to meet the 12-month terms can lead to fees and even debt collection. Switching addresses or changing plans during the period, even for legitimate reasons, may trigger penalties unless done under the proper guidelines.

What this means for Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.

As i have mentioned earlier, if you have visited relatives in remote rural areas you would know the struggle of finding good service you have to travel long distances just to send a text or call, with some areas even having no coverage at all. StarLink uses satellites which float in Low earth orbit and are able to cover even the most remote areas providing the same speeds as if you were in Cities.

However there had been a barrier for entry with high costs for equipment. This new plan somehow reduces the entry costs by offering free kits in exchange for a long-term service commitment allowing households and businesses to connect without upfront hardware payments but we hope even the kits become more and more affordable.

Users have welcomed this move by StarLink and with more options, prices will go down and help everyone to stay connected.
